How does it determine when to turn that light on? I've seen it turn on
as low as 1300 RPM, when shifting would lug the engine badly. AFAICT it
is the "if I were an automatic transmission you would be fighting with
me now" light.

Ours turns on at 30 mph in 4th gear so it 'must' just be pointing the
way. :-)

I believe it relies on vacuum pressure from the way it acts but could be
mistaken, if rpm were in there it wouldn't come on at 'fast idle' rpm
speeds I wouldn't think.

Ours had a vacuum front axle disconnect too and we had to futz with the
gas pedal sometimes to get it to turn off the 4x4 light and unlock.
