My Jeep w/ bad computer
Hi all,
Just wanted to say what a wealth of information you all have here. I was able to order a computer through Fisher auto parts for $200 just like I was told here. I called the guy back to double check on having it programmed. He told me that they *never come pre programmed and that I'd have to take it to a dealership to have that done. I told him I was told online that it wouldn't need to be. He called me back after finding out that indeed I did NOT have to get it programmed. :) yay! So I'm going down to pay for one this week and he'll have to order it. Much cheaper than having it done at the Jeep dealership. They wanted $550! So thanks again! So glad I found this site! I've got an extra ECM for an '86 full size Chevy. If anyone
is interested, email me for more details. You'll need your own PROM to install in this unit. scott_unit_69(AT) yahoo(DOT)com. Make offer. It's collecting dust with all my old AM CB equipment. :) I sold the car last year. This is a tested extra computer. I got one at a boneyard and I drove around with it for a week until someone gave me another. I swapped PROMs and never bothered to swap the unit back. I fried my original with some bare underhood wires. The fried one was tossed. This was my spare unit. The car drove with the ECM unpluggged, like a 5 ton bag of sand! Negotable plus exact shipping from 212. |

Large amounts of RF, a bad alternator (too much voltage) and shorting bare wires will kill a computer. Be sure to check all the wires to the sensors before putting a $200 computer in your vehicle. Also, connectors are always suspect. I pull my connectors apart and reconnect them every few months. If one starts to go bad, I'll know about it before it surprizes me. My Jeep is my first new "car". I watch over it like a hawk! 9 years old last month. |

Re: My Jeep w/ bad computer
Hi Scott in Baltimore,
We checked as much as we could check, so I just hope it works. Which connectors are you referring to and how can you tell they are bad? My husband went over everything else Saturday and there seems to be no other problems that we can see. All the grounds look good, etc. I swear, I wish it was warmer out, or we had our garage finished so I could crawl up under that hood, but I can't MOVE in this weather, let alone realize what I'm looking at under the hood on that Jeep. Sheesh. I'll let ya'll know if it works. Mary in WV |

Re: My Jeep w/ bad computer
Yikes! I hate doing anything outside in the winter! We got lucky w/ a
nice day today, but I'm sure it will go swiftly downhill from here. We've already had two decent snowstorms, and a bad ice storm. The jeep is amazing in snow, but about as bad as anything else in the ice. I think that's all about luck! I couldn't believe how my big pig (Crown Vic w/ the takeoff gearing, ffffaasssssttttt!) did w/ chains on the tires. The bad part is that I live on top of a mountain so I have to go down or up to go anywhere! Mary |

Hi Mary,
Just a suggestion... add your vehicle information to your signature... then we don't have to go back and find your original post to identify your vehicle. I was going to suggest the "Nutter Bypass" to eliminate your computer, but I don't think it applies to your 94 YJ. Nothing drives well on ice. I remember seeing WWII vintage footage from
the Battle of the Bulge showing a tank sliding off an icy roadway -- sideways. That your Crown Vic does well in chains isn't too much of a surprise. It is one of the reasons that it is base for the standard police vehicle. Mary wrote: > Yikes! I hate doing anything outside in the winter!
