Mud King tires

Anyone have an opinion of Mud King tires? They are the older model BFG mud
terrains, sold under a new name. Any thoughts on how they perform both on
road and off, and what the tread wear is like?

I'm considering a switch to a more aggressive tread pattern from the current
Cooper ST's (which incidentally I like very much). Most mud terrains are
within the budget....but they certainly do stretch it, and I can get the mud
kings at a 25% discount relatively speaking; so needless to say I'm
considereing them!

Thanks,
RAC

Re: Mud King tires

I lived up in Northern WV for 12 years or so, they were really popular
there. It seemed anybody with a 4WD ran Mud Kings.
Cheap, good traction, and lasted a good while.

I prefer the Cooper brand tire too, and have had much luck with the
Discoverer series.

Have ya checked out the new Cooper STT's with the new tread pattern, quite a
bit more aggresive than the old STT's and sexy side lugging not to mention
the re-enforced sidewalls...been running them on my wife's ZJ for the last
year and a half...GREAT tire!

Re: Mud King tires

Mud Kings are not a switched or new name, but a BFG second line they
sell under the 'kings' logo. I had them on my CJ7 when I got it 10
years ago.

The tread is the same style, but seems noisier than the first line BFG
muds.

The sidewalls are only 2 ply where the BFG's have 3 ply sidewalls.

They seem to wear well, though I don't know the miles mine got because I
don't know how old they were. I got 3 years out of the ones the Jeep
came with (I figured less than 50% was left on them) and I am now going
on 7 years with the BFG muds and still have about 50% left.

I had no real complaints about them other than the 10.5" wide at the
tread was really too large a footprint for the 'best' traction in my
CJ7. I radically increased the wheel bite when I went to 33x9.5's that
have a 7.5" tread width.

Re: Mud King tires

I don't put any faith in the TireRack's customer surveys. Most drivers can't
tell if they have a low pressure tire, much less compare the performance to
other tires. New tires are always better than the old ones.
Mud kings are supposedly the same tire as the old MT, with one less sidewall
ply. That makes it a great tire, but for a vehicle driven mostly on
pavement, something with smaller lugs will work better, like an AT.

TireRack surveys need to be taken with a grain of salt slightly
smaller than a cowlick.

However, it's fairly easy to read the reviews and determine if
the rating is credible.

I have been running them since 95 & I like them.. they are in expensive, not
a lot of road noise, & for the wheeling I do they work fine!
