Mechanical fan clutch questions??

I was just wondering if there is a way to test the clutch of the
mechanical fan without in stall it in the J**P??
a buddy at work has several fan clutches (4 or 5) kicking around his place,
that he picked up for his XJ before he sold it (I think they are used, but
its hard to tell, he had them stored under his trailer for the winter).
Since my fan clutch is shot and he has offered them to me for free, I was
wondering if there is any possible way to test them without installing them
(just a PITA if I install them 1 at a time and they don't work and have to
re-install the next one).

Would directing a heat gun onto the clutch itself (to warm it up) then
trying to turn the fan blades work??? he said 2 of them have a fan attached
already.

Re: Mechanical fan clutch questions??

Anything that I can think of would be harder than putting the fans on the
vehicle. I would get a new one. Imho, a fan clutch is a piece of crap and
the only thing worse than a new piece of crap is a used piece of crap.
