largest tires on stock XJ without Rubbing
 

Hi,
can someone tell me the largest tires I can put on a stock '97 XJ (with up
country) without having the tires rub?

Tires rubbing at full turn never bothered me. I just figure if I
didn't need that tight a turn I wouldn't do it, why cut the radius by
adjusting the stop?

I general I would agree with reducing the radius however the guys who
did the fix for me at the Off Road General Store in Laguna Hills said
they merely put a washer on the steering stops.

I never really thought about how much turning radius I lost by doing so
until you brought it up... Assuming you don't already have a URL on how
much radius would be lost, how much would you figure would be lost by
doing so?

Hi Taylor,
There's a place called the Notch, out in my local desert, where no
matter how infinitesimal you think the loss is you'd be kicking yourself
for putting in that washer.

Never heard of The Notch here in California... is that out near Anza
Borrego/Ocotillo? In any case really hardcore trails are not my thing.
I enjoy off-roading but I can live without the hardcore off-roading.

However you will be pleased my new Jeep has leaf springs :)

Hi Taylor,
Twenty miles east of Ocotillo, on the pole line road, mid way
between hwy. 78 and Salt and Sea way, turn east at where there used to
be a sand dune (sorry I don't remember the pole number and sand dune is
gone.) and go down that wash, look for a trail that goes to the right,
it will take you to an artesian well that flows for about twenty seconds
every couple of minutes, signifying you're gone too far, look back and
about the highest point there'll be a trail that goes over that mud hill
into the notch. It's a fun trip any stock jeep will make it through, but
usually tear a cloth top if that's left on, form those that are too lazy
to turn lock to lock fifty times on each bend.

Hi Taylor,
Oops, I was going to tell you it's too hot in August, until I
noticed in your signature you're driving a Cherokee, unfortunately it
way too big to make it through the Notch. There's still plenty of trails
to see, though. Be sure and reminds us when you're about to go Ocotillo.
