Jerome is an old mining town right out of the movies, and that's just the
part you can get to with the family sedan and a pair of flip-flops.

My recollection is that the old hospital was closed after the mine closed in
the mid fifties. At Jerome's highest population there may have been as many
as thirty thousand population. There were many boarding houses and other
homes that are no longer there. Jerome burned "to the ground" many times.
The Jeep road referred to is actually a dirt road that connects Jerome to
Williams and Chino Valley. It is not specifically a Jeep trail.
It is a cool ride. Out of Jerome there is a road that goes over the top of
the mountain and provides an overlook of the town. Pretty tough road, 4
miles in about two-hours. The Gold King mine is not actually a mine but as
some pretty interesting old machines.
Be sure to stop at the Jerome Sate Pak and
he Mine museum right in town.
