Jeep "stuck" in PT-WheelDrive

First of all thanks to those who advised me last week on my JGC Loredo
4.0 '96 w/126K mi. that would not move forward in any gear. Yes,...I
was low 1 qt of tranmission oil (the wife took the car in for an oil &
trans miss. oil change the previous week). I am talking with that shop
now abour their neglect on that front.

However....after I placed in another qt of transmission oil....after
warming up for 15 minutes...I placed the Jeep in gear and still got in
Drive, 2nd or 1st (still full power in reverse). So...out of just
exploring around you might say....I put the Jeep in 4WD & PartTime WD
just to see if that change would create some locomotion/forward
movement. Well after FLOORING the gas extensively....the Jeep pulled
forward as the car happened to be in PT WD.

I drove 1 block...Now?
1). Jeep has full power in all forward gears
2). Jeep is Jerky now in reverse and will lunge itself to a jerking
stop in reverse after depressing the gas....after about 10'. I can
contune to accelerate and go backwards.
3). Jeep I locked in PT WD.

Did some googling and learned about the synchros, work around solutions
on driving backwards some distance, pulling to a stop, going to PARK
and placing the car in 2WD, and even in trying to get on some loose
gravel type of things. I've done all this and it's been to no use.

I can't get this car out of PartTime WD. Any clues, tips or hints on
why else I might try to get it out of PT and back into 2WD?

Lance

No offense meant, but I like reading this news group, because it never
ceases to entertain. I would try putting the transmission in Neutral. If
that doesn't help, shut off the engine, with the transmission in Neutral,
and see if you can now shift out of PT 4WD. That lunging in reverse sounds
like it might be normal, if your PT 4WD is also a low range. I don't know
for sure that it is.

What would cause this? I wonder if the vehicle, apparently recently bought
used, has never been in four wheel drive before. If so, maybe the linkage
and transfer case shifting mechanism are just stiff from disuse. One could
hope, that is all it is.

Well since they f@#$ed the transmission fluid maybe they messed with the
transfer case fluid and did a splendid job on it too!

Just out of curiosity...... is this Command-Trac or Select-Trac? I was
thinking Select-Trac became standard in '96.
