Jeep Liberty ... Hood lettering

Hello... My Liberty is only 7 months old... I've noticed that the "JEEP"
lettering on the hood has a thin plastic covering on it that has started
to peel off. However...It seems if you pull this plastic off, the
chrome underneath disintigrates into a dull, ugly blackish-gray colour
that cannot be repolished into the shiny chrome. ...Knowing the cost
of replacing parts, I wouldn't be at all surprised if each letter cost a
hundred bucks or more to replace. Has anyone else had problems like
this, and what can be done about it? Thanks for any help.... Jon.

The plastic is/was there to prevent the metal paint under it from tarnishing.
What remains under the plastic is too thin to polish.

Considering the age of your vehicle I'd be taking it back and have the dealer
fix the problem. However, since you have pealed off the protective cover don't
be surprised if they won't fix it under warranty. In that case I'd see about
polishing it off then recoating to protect the base color.

Re: Jeep Liberty ... Hood lettering

Hi Doug ... Thanks for the response. ...Actually, I hadn't touched the
plastic, until today. I noticed it a few months ago, but ignored it as I
thought it was like the plastic that covers a new watch crystal. IE: A
temporary cover. I thought.. OK, it'll wear off by itself. ...Today
I looked and noticed how ugly the "J" and 11/2 of the "E"s looked.
...The "P" at the end appears OK, (so far). ...I noticed some loose
plastic on the 2nd "E" and went to take it off. ...It opened up a 1/4
inch section of chrome which turned the dull, ugly gray colour within a
few minutes. ....Jon

Re: Jeep Liberty ... Hood lettering

Hi Jon,

I am having the same problem with hood emblem peeling and discoloring on my
2001 GC. But it is not only the hood emblem, but also the lettering on the
side of the doors. Thinking that the peeling plastic surface on the letters
was met to be removed, I pulled it off, not realizing that it was the
protective covering. I have had some of the letters replaced under
warranty, but I am not sure that the replacement letters are going to hold
up.

I would have thought that DC might have corrected the problem by now.
