Interior Door Handles: '93 Cherokee XJ

The driver's side interior door handle on my '93 XJ is somewhat
suspect. Although it still does the job opening the door, it just
kind of hangs there... i.e. it doesn't "spring" back into place after
I pull on it to open the door. Now, the other night, as my wife is
exiting the passenger side, some sort of spring breaks, pieces flying,
and that door handle no longer functions at all. Getting out of the
vehicle being somewhat of a safety concern, I'd like to get both of
them fixed. Any leads on the part needed and where I could locate
them?

Thanks.

There are a lot of Cherokees in the wrecking yards around here. I would
be going there for parts after I removed both handles to make sure they
are the only thing broken.

Rolling down the window to let yourself out sure looks silly eh... ;-)

Yeah... I've spent most of the morning sending out "feelers" to the
various bone yards in the state here. Hopefully, something will turn

You need to open the door panels to see what is needed. My guess is that the
driver door mechanism just needs a good cleaning, and the passenger door
needs a new clip or two, maybe a spring.

This should be an easy job at home. There is a section in the auto parts
store that sells HELP brand parts, many of which are door mechanism pieces.
HELP parts are packed in red blister packs. On second thought, the color of
the pack may denote the location of the part's usage -- internal part,
external part, engine part, etc. (I'm not sure on that point, but I am
pretty sure that the HELP parts that I've needed came in red packages. I've
used HELP parts to repair ignition switch components, so red would be
interior parts.)

In any case, you should be able to find what you need out on the floor as
opposed to getting the counter guy to look stuff up in his computer.

Thanks, Jeff...

At this point, I believe that what I need is some sort of spring.
When the wife pulled on the handle of the passenger side the other
night a piece of it (the spring) came sailing across the passenger
compartment into my lap.

The driver's side handle will still open the door, but the handle
itself doesn't "spring" back into its resting place after being
pulled... rather, it just kind of hangs out. I'm guessing a spring
here, too, right?

Odds are that you need a couple of springs. My guess is that the driver side
needs cleaning more than anything. In any case, none of the trouble you are
having is fatal. The repair parts should be on the shelf out on the floor.
You may find that the smaller parts stores might not carry as many HELP
parts as the larger outlets. I find that Pep Boys (a large retail chain on
the west coast) has the best assortment.

You'll need to open the doors and inspect the linkages to see what you need.

Ya think!?

I can't help but wonder if your locks and latches are freezing under the

Now that sounds like mine. Below 15 degrees or so I have to be very
careful not to push the button before unlocking the door. If I (or more
generally, my wife) tries to open the door before unlocking it, we are in
for a short delay while I fiddle with the lock. Something is dragging and
not moving into position where the key can activate the lock mechanism.
The is a spot in the travel of the lock button which will do the same
thing - can't open the door, can't work the lock. Works fine after a
little heat is applied - think it's a commentary on living where it gets
that cold?

Running a yellow snow concession stand?

If the wind isn't blowing, you can get used to it reasonably quickly,
enough that if you are doing something like cutting wood, lopping trees,
etc. you would get warm enough to need to take off a heavy coat.
.. . . until the wind starts.

Then what?

Usually, if it is snowing, it isn't much below 0ºC, or 32ºF.
