Select one message in the thread and hit crtl-t and it will mark the thread
as read. Set of OE to only show unread messages... OR just click next to a
message in the eyeglass icon column until it shows blocked OR click on a
message in thread and click message->ignore conversation

Killfiles are your friend. I don't run Outlook here, but there surely
must be some sort of filtering option available to you. Just kill all
messages that have certain keywords in the subject line. You'll never see
them again and your reading time will be _much_ more pleasant. It's like
Gold Bond Powder for Usenet.
