Help with side step rivet nut installation tool.
So I got my stock side steps and I went to the dealer and picked up 8 rivet
nuts. I found this site that give step by step instructions :-) http://www.specialtyparts.com/parts/...204304info.htm The problem is I do not have a rivet nut installation bolt or a rivet nut installation tool. The rivet nut installation tool looks like some kind of nut that will keep the rivet nut from turning so you can collapse the rivet. The dealer told me that they do not sell the installation bolt or tool. He said that I could use the bolt that I am going to attach the step with as the installation bolt, and that I could get a rivet nut installation tool at the lowes or home depot. Needless to say I couldnt find what I needed at home depot and the employees had no idea. Any help here is greatly appretiated :-) Thanks! Cameron '03 X |

Probably your stealership's mechanics never bother to buy the tool
because an air impact wrench will zip it up by just putting the nut in a little bind, maybe with a socket, just big enough to use the draw bolt on. http://www.hengze-fastening.com/blin...ivetnut-13.htm God Bless America, ßill O|||||||O mailto:-------------------- http://www.----------.com/ Ree-Yees wrote: > > So I got my stock side steps and I went to the dealer and picked up 8 rivet > nuts. > > I found this site that give step by step instructions :-) > http://www.specialtyparts.com/parts/...204304info.htm > > The problem is I do not have a rivet nut installation bolt or a rivet nut > installation tool. > > The rivet nut installation tool looks like some kind of nut that will keep > the rivet nut from turning so you can collapse the rivet. > > The dealer told me that they do not sell the installation bolt or tool. Re: Help with side step rivet nut installation tool.
With a little creativity, you can do it without the tool. The trick is
to not let the rivet turn. You need in this order: rivet in hole, flat washer, nut either drilled out, or one size larger than threads of bolt, proper nut for bolt, then the bolt itself. The larger nut allows the bolt to pull the rivet tight while being held to prevent any turning motion on the rivet. It's a pain to explain, but putting the nut on the bolt most of the way up, then slipping on the larger nut then washer and installing all this into the rivet, you hold the loose nut and torque the real nut and this seats the rivet. Re: Help with side step rivet nut installation tool.
Sounds like a good plan to me. I will have to pick up some specific sized
nuts from the depot tomorrow, but first i think I'll swing back over to the dealer and try to get them to give/sell me some the right size :-) I should at least give them a little grief for just sending me to tha hardware store to get me out of the way! How much pressure is it going to take to bend that metal on the rivet to seat it? --C "Flash" <flash@wcnet.net> wrote in message news:vv84gvkbd9qbc6dq5aubhn03uu6mjihsr8@4ax.com... > With a little creativity, you can do it without the tool. Re: Help with side step rivet nut installation tool.
I've managed to do it with short wrenches on 1/4" bolt types. Not too
tough. Get good at it, and on the larger bolts, you can even do it with an impact if you have rear talent for finesse. You still use a wrench on the oversized nut for the backup. I prefer the airtools since I get a better feel of when it's properly collapsed. Remember, I've got 21 years of hands on, so if you don't feel comfortable, be sure and use the hand tools!
