Help! Name that part!
 
OK, this is irritating the hell out of me. I have an '80 CJ5 with a
258.
On the heater hose that is connected to the thermostat housing,
there's a brass fixture with some kind of valve screwed into it. The
hose is connected to one side, then the other. The valve is vaguely
spark-plug shaped, but only about an inch long, plastic, with three
vacuum hoses coming off of it... at least I assume they're vacuum
hoses, operating on the vacuum created by the passing water above. The
problem is, this thing is plastic, and, wonder of wonders, it's
cracked around one of the vacuum line connections. Anyone want to take
a shot? Seems like I knew the name of this bugger, but for the life of
me, I can't remember.

It is operated by the coolant temperature. Your looking at a thermal
switch used by the vac system to determine when the engine is hot. I
forget exactly what it hooks to. Vacuume comes from a port on the carb.

Yeah, but <what do you call it>? I need to replace it, I don't know
what to ask for... lol My damn Chilton's doesn't seem to have any
reference to it. Thermal vacuum valve? Thermal vacuum switch? It looks
like it costs all of about a dollar. It got replaced at another point,
but I was having the carb rebuilt at the time, so didn't do it
myself... but I remember the guy showing me where it cracked, and this
one is broken in the same place--naturally.

Yeah, but <what do you call it>? I need to replace it, I don't know

reference to it. Thermal vacuum valve? Thermal vacuum switch? It looks
like it costs all of about a dollar. It got replaced at another point,
but I was having the carb rebuilt at the time, so didn't do it
myself... but I remember the guy showing me where it cracked, and this

Those names sound good to me. It's used to shut off the vacuum to
the distributor advance diaphragm or Exhaust Gases Recycling valve,
cold: http://www.----------.com/vacValve.jpg I would toss it unless you
need it to pass SMOG visual.
