HELP carb not getting gas

my 88 yj has been having problems with getting gas. no gas shoots out
in the carb when i hit the pedal. this happened a few weeks ago but
started working again. the car was running fine until recently. when
i put gas straight down the carburetor it starts and stops so i assume
its just the fuel line thats faulty. the fuel filter is new so its
not that. i took the venturi out of it and made sure nothing was
clogged. nothing was found so i put it back together. i did this
because i read somewhere that it was needed if gas dripped out when
car was idling. from recent work to the carb i noticed this was
happening so i figured id give it a shot. i have a 258 Carter BBD
carburetor.
any help with where to begin is appreciated thanks in advance

The first thing to do is to make sure the gas is getting to the carb
itself. The best way to do this is to unhook the fuel line somewhere
between the carb and fuel pump, and run a hose into a container. Crank
the engine over and time about 15-20 seconds. You should get roughly 1
quart of gas in the container in this time. If you don't get good gas
flow then either the pump is bad, or there is a restriction in the fuel
line somewhere. This could be caused by a deteriorated hose or kinked line.

If the fuel flow is sufficient, then it sounds like the carb has issues.
This carb is prone to plugging up in the idle tube restrictions. It
usually requires a small piece of piano wire to clear them out. I you're
having idle issues and not getting a shot of gas when you step on the
pedal, but have gas flow, then the carb needs to be cleaned and rebuilt.

I don't know that carb, but does it have a separate accellerator pump
that adds just a shot of gas when you pump the pedal?

Got a float valve in the carb that is leaking down? Sometimes can be
cured by just pulling it and tapping gently with a soft mallet...but by
the time you get it that far about a rebuild kit would be in order.

Did you put the fuel filter back in right side up?

The filter has two outlets, the center one goes to the carb and the
'top' one goes to the return line. This one must be up top or the gas
will siphon back to the tank air locking the pump so you get no gas into
the carb. You can prime it a few time to get the like full and it will
run until the next time it sits.

Any gas smell? If so check the rubber line where it goes from the frame
to the tank in the back and up front to the pump.
