Headers for 83 CJ7

I have a question reguarding headers for my jeep. I have an 83 CJ7
with 258 engine. So far all I have done is put in a K&N air filter in
it. I would like to increase the horse power and was thinking of
adding some headers. i was told headers will not make much of a
diffrece. Is this true and does anyone have a better suggestion on
how to add some power to my jeep. Thanks for any help that comes my
way!!!

Depends on your budget.
Headers with a cat-back will free up some lower end torque.
Next is stroking or supercharging, but with your engines age I would
not recommend a supercharger. An electric fan in place of the mechanical
one will also free up a few ponies.

Re: Headers for 83 CJ7

I think headers will help a lot, probably MUCH more than the air filter. (I
am certain that there will be discussion in this thread that the K&N was a
bad idea.)

I installed a Borla header on my CJ, and it improved the breathing of my
motor significantly. The stock exhaust manifold is very inefficient. It
brings all six ports to a single point, and it can not hold the contents of
the cylinders, so by definition, it causes poor power. A header will have
tubes that are capable of holding the contents of the port they are
connected to, and therefore the power output must improve. Think about it,
if the old air can not get out, then new air can not get in. If new air can
not get in, power will suffer. Or, to put it another way, if MORE new air
can get in, then more power is produced.

The header is a very good investment for fuel economy. Be sure to get one
that will comply with the smog rules where yo live. Since California has the
most strict rules in the nation, the Borla is a good choice because
California likes it. DO NOT get a header that is not smog legal in CA, even
if you don't live here now, or never expect to live here. I have a neighbor
that thought he would never live here but now he does, and the header that
passed muster in Arizona was no good here, and he had to spend significant
coinage to convert back to the original manifold. Don't do that to yourself,
or to an unsuspecting future owner. The cost-up to get a header that will
get past the CA smog nazis is insignificant, and the benefit of planning
ahead is worth any added cost.

Doug,
How does an electric fan free up ponies? Does it cause a drag/resistance
on the system?
