Has anyone tried to build up a 4 banger?
Has anyone tried to build up a 4 banger? Cam, headers, performance
parts. If so what kind of results did you have? I posted a while back and a few thought I was a troll because of some language I used. When I posted there were nothing but goat cum postings, I was wondering how much this group did with jeeps. I went to another group for jeeps and got some good info. I came back today and found some helpfull people on here also. For those who helped thank you. Anyhow I have had the transmission and transfercase rebuilt. Rebuilt the rear brakes, and the frontend is next. I'm thinking about pulling the motor this winter and trying to beef it up. It is a 4 banger from an 89 wrangler. I was just wondering where to get some performance parts for these motors. I know everyone goes to the 6 banger or V8. If anyone has any info let me know. Thanks ahead of time. Paul Reply |

There really is no substitute for displacement. You can build a screaming
hot-rod 4 banger, and it will be working hard all the time, and probably not only burn fuel like crazy, but die early , where a stock smallblock or 4.0 will probably return better economy and be nearly bulletproof. The costs involved in doing a good job of building a hi-performance 4 banger are probaly higher than buying a 350 from a wreck and replacing the longblock with a reman unit.. |

www.borla.com Mopar performance parts from e.g. www.summitracing.com The biggest bang for your buck is probably a 4.0 liter throttle body (or a bored out 2.5 liter throttle body) and a cat-back exhaust system. Sooner or later, your present muffler is going to rot out anyway. A K&N is good too, especially with an air tube that gets it out of the water splash. People rag on the K&N because it "lets more dirt in" but I think they are jealous. If you reposition the filter right on top of the valve cover, this should decrease the amount of dirt actually reaching it. They do require periodic maintenance, that many people don't care for. An electric radiator fan will realize some highway savings, percentage wise. I haven't tried any internal engine parts, yet. Surprisingly, or not, performance parts and an aggressive driving style with this engine seem to yield fuel savings more than horsepower, at least in my experience. I think the best thing that you could do is to block off fifth gear, or just don't use it.
