Got my CJ7 up and safe to drive finally. Yee Haw!
 

I had a bad pinion bearing in my 86 CJ7.

I stupidly believed a local Jeep shop when he told me his air gun was
set 'right' for doing up the 'old' pinion nut when he put a new yoke and
seal in for me.

Grrrr.... I 'do' know better, but....

Man, it turned the internal oil slinger washer into a funnel shape and
all the tapered bearings inside got the small end just chewed off....
The lock nut was a finger spin, it is supposed to be crimped into a
triangle and is a one use nut. Well, 'maybe' a second use, but that is
pushing it.

The shop doing the proper replacement went to press off the old bearing
and it just fell into pieces. He went 'crap, well that is sure a
bearing that 'just fell apart in my hands, wow how much noise was it
making?' He replaced all the bearings while he had it open, the carrier
bearings had been vibrated bad enough to have play too.

I didn't figure it was really noisy until I left the shop to come home.
'Hey!, what the heck happened to my mud tire 'road noise'?'

LOL! I just figured the tires were getting slowly noisier as they
wore. Nope.

The thing is scary it is so quiet now, feels like 10 more HP too.

I couldn't get it fixed all summer because I was a passenger in a nasty
passenger side T-bone hit and the insurance didn't start giving me
income replacement until last week. At least the suckers owed me 6
months back pay....

What a royal pain to have no income all summer. I am thankful my
landlord waited for the insurance cheque for rent. Nice guy!

Now I have my CJ7 purring and gas money and finally the doctors
permission to go on trails so I am going to go get lost in the bush for
a week real soon. Can't work yet, so going for a commune with Mother
Nature does good things for my soul.

I hope the temperature drops some, it is still top and doors off today
with rain when it comes down, I prefer snow at these temperatures.

I have almost half that on it already. Got gas money finally and have
been buzzing around all over the place the last couple days.

The weather has been wicked for Nov. in Canada. Sunny so I can go top
and doors off!

Even went down to visit 'Mad Jo' at her new 'studio' for seamstress
training and sewing work today. Haven't seen her in months. Steve and
her are doing fine, but neither has time to post here these days.

The rear end on the CJ is just purring.

The dude did a good job and knew what he was doing. I watched him
mic'ing out the spacers for the pretorque and set up. His shop also has
all the wicked big machines. Mills, lathes, boring/honing machines and
all 'Big' machines, not toys. He can do total engine and head rebuilds
and has been in business since 74 with a really good reputation.

I 'am' a picky bugger when it comes to work done on my vehicle by
someone else because I know how to do most of it and know how the 'right
way' is supposed to work.

The guy's name is Hans at Ontario RV in Toronto Canada.

I was impressed.
