<<<The controversy heated up last month when news stories had Bernhard
suggesting that future Jeeps would be softer, more cuddly.

Bernhard says it was a misunderstanding. "Every Jeep in this room will be the
most capable SUV in its segment, the toughest, best off-roaders — but with
better on-road manners," he says.

Bell, who had never driven the Rubicon Trail, says no one knew what the
trail-worthy designation meant. "Rubicon worthy according to who? It was just
in the air," he says.

Now they do. After driving the trail in a Wrangler, Bell contracted with the
Nevada Automotive Test Center, which conducts off-road tests and sets standards
for the U.S. military, to certify each Jeep model for traction, ground
clearance, maneuverability and water fording. Starting last month, Jeep began
advertising that every model is "trail rated."

"Every Jeep we have now and will have, and every Jeep on the drawing board will
be trail rated, and I invite anyone to take them on the Rubicon Trail. Period,"
Bell says.

Jeep lovers like Sally Perkins, a Denver Wrangler owner who off-roads with her
fiancé, couldn't be happier. "I saw something on a Jeep Web site about softer
Jeeps, and thought, 'God, I better buy two before they turn them into Hondas,'
" Perkins says.

Interesting, I guess that includes 2 wheel drive models. Has a 2 wheel
drive Jeep ever conquered the Rubicon?

badge, and without that badge you cannot safely traverse the
