I've done it before without issue, but I couldn't say what the concrete rule
is. The way I see it from a buyer/seller standpoint it's 6 of one, half
dozen of the other. As a buyer you wouldn't know what the reserve is, and
as a buyer you don't know what the magic number in my head is either.
Either way the buyer doesn't know. At least this way there is a little
flexibility. If the buyer gets close enough to my magic number I might just
go ahead and sell anyway and eBay gets paid. With a reserve it's cut and
dried, as in close doesn't count, and there is no sale.

If a no reserve auction gets at least ONE bid, the seller is obligated
to sell the item if the auction completes. Sellers are allowed to
remove an item before the end of the auction.

Have a minimum in mind? Set a reserve, or make the first bid your
minimum. I usually choose the former, as there seems to be some
psychological advantage to having an opening bid of $5 or $10 bucks.
The item will typically quickly get very close to a reasonable opening
bid all by itself.

Personally, when I use a reserve, I state the reserve amount in the
listing. I've never seen the logic of keeping it a secret. If my
reserve is reasonable, people still bid. Items that I simply want to
move are listed with no reserve and sold to the highest bidder.

eBay is an excellent market value indicator. If the value is low,
*someone* will usually bid the item up. Reserve is over market value?
The item won't sell.
