Front speaker issue - '98 XJ

My front (door panel) speakers are acting-up. They don't work unless I slam
the (driver's) door after power is "on". Then, they'll work - for hundreds of
miles. If I switch off the power to the radio/CD/casette, I need to re-slam
the driver's door to "reactivate" them. I've changed-out the speakers
front-to-rear and the problem persists. Also re-checked wire connections and
grounding. It's not like a loose wire that comes & goes. It is consistently
as I described above. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Front speaker issue - '98 XJ

This is truly weird. Are **both** left and right (front) speakers
affected ? Are you using an external amp, which might have a componment
problem or a loose plug on the input or output connections ?

I know you said you have checked the wires at the speakers, but have you
wiggled the speaker connections while the radio is on, to see if you have a
hidden bad connection ?

Have you checked all of the connections to your car radio itself ?

I am just wondering if it is a speaker problem at all. May be another
component in the stereo system.

Good Luck !!

Re: Front speaker issue - '98 XJ

On my 99 xj I had the same problem. I removed the door panel and the kick
plate (drivers side) on the inside and found a wire connection broken. It
was at a point where the one of the speaker wires it connected to another
thicker wire. I forget the colors, but I added an extension and soldered it
in - never had the problem again.

Re: Front speaker issue - '98 XJ

The system is pure-stock ("Classic" trim level w/AM/FM/CD/Casette, but no aux.
amp.)

Originally it was only the LF speaker, now it's both. The fader/balance
control in the dash works fine. I can replicate the condition with the door
panel removed by unplugging/re-plugging the speaker connection. It happens
with any speaker connected there. I changed the wire & connector and soldered
all wire connections. I have been chasing this all summer. I'd try going
farther upstream with my wire substitutions, but again, I can always replicate
the problem by disconnecting/reconnecting the speaker connection. (It "pops",
as if it's just receiving power.) Pressing the Power On switch on the dash
doesn't make it work. Neither does wiggling any of the wires. Thanks for your
thoughts.

Hmm, sounds like more of a problem than I had. I'd have to start with the
stereo itself.

it is a wire issue and you need to run new ones from the radio to the speaker
to save money factory harnes is a few bucs verses wire from walmart
there is splices in the door harness that break

Re: Front speaker issue - '98 XJ

I began to run into lots of splices/connectors when I was planning to pull a
new wire. I suspected that the wire had failed at the door "flex" point -
probably still is the case. I had thought that the wiring harness would be too
expensive from the Dealer, and have been watching the U-Wrench-It lot for an
XJ. Your suggestion that I at least check the dealer's price is a good one.
Thanks again to all.
