Engine dies out.
Engine dies out.
Jeep Cherokee Laredo 4.0L Automatic, 6syl. 1988 Mod Once a week or maybe one time every second week, the engine just stops. Scenario, I drive for a while and stop the engine, maybe 5 minutes later I start the engine and want to drive, then suddenly the engine just stop and no lights at all are blinking or showing any sign, they are just dead, as if the battery had been taken out. I just start up again, and the same thing happens 3-4 more times, I am able to drive maybe 2-3 meters for every time. Then the fifth time it start again, and I can drive for a week and half before the same things happens again. Any suggestions? Best Regards Geir R.Pettersson grp.arctic@heating.no http://www.arctic-heating.com |

I know of nothing that may act like discounting the battery other
than bad terminal connections, and that would be pretty weird for that connect to start the engine after. I have seen shorts that strong in an alternator that would kill the engine and then lose it centrifugal connection then be able to start the engine and have it run perfect until the next time you reached that RPM to short again. If it was just killing the engine than the Crankcase Position Sensor is usually the culprit: http://www.off-road.com/jeep/cheroke...tdcsensor.html At your mileage the fuel pump will be on it's last leg, and could be acting up. I don't know, tell us when you find the cause. Re: Engine dies out.
He says "no lights at all are blinking" -- I wonder if that includes his headlights? You might be spot on with thinking of the battery, if he's got a really cruddy connection someplace the starter will pull enough amps to arc across it and weld a tiny path while cranking. Engine vibration then shakes it loose and he loses everything electrical. I once had a Malibu that would occasionally have a complete electrical failure while driving (lots of fun in high-speed traffic), as soon as I hit a bump it would come right back. It turned out to be the battery cable connection at the starter was loose. Geir should disassemble, clean and reassemble all the heavy cable connections and check the ground strap from the back of the engine to the firewall. It is an uninsulated flat braided wire strap about 1/4" wide. Re: Engine dies out.
Something like that happened to our 88.
It was a rotted mesh ground strap from the rear of the engine head to the firewall.
