emissions maintenance light

I have a 1988 jeep cherokee pioneer, with 238,000 miles on it. The emissions
maintenance light has come on. What do I do to remedy this?

I think that this applies to all the early Cherokees and Wranglers, but
consult a manual or dealer. The emissions light goes on, and stays on,
until you replace the control unit. If you want to be squeaky clean, and
adher to all federal regulations, then you should replace it.

Re: emissions maintenance light

The 88 will have a timer that sets every 80k miles - the shop manual
says to disconnect it after the first pass as it is no longer required
(their emissions responsiblity required it to set then). There is a
web site that tells you how to reset it but it's much easier just to
pull the @#$% module out and be done with it. Under the dash, left
side of the column, little black box. Mine was Velcroed in place.
Unplug it. Test - you may have unplugged your intermitent wiper
module <g>.
