emissions failed texas

1995 YJ 2.5L, borla cat back, new cat, new O2 sensor, freshly cleaned
K&N filter, ultra-gaurd fram oil filter, synthetic 10w-40 oil, failing
NOx...Spent a LOT of money so far... Only thing I can see now is the
fact that there seems to be excessive oil from the valve cover
breather tube to the air box. Any help out there PLEASE?!?!?!

Sparkly plugs in good shape?
Might consider registering in a county that doesn't do emissions testing...

Re: emissions failed texas

NOx is a by-product of high combustion chamber temperature. The primary
means for controlling this is the EGR system. I don't think 2.5l has
one.... someone correct me if that is wrong. Ignition timing issues will
also give you a NOx problem, although it is computer-controlled and not
adjustable. This doesn't mean that there isn't a problem though. Ignition
system relies upon a knock sensor that is working properly to control
detonation. Detonation is bad, if your engine pings, it is creating NOx.
Another thing that will cause NOx emissions to go up is if you are running a
lean mixture, again computer controlled.

The bottom line is that it is probably going to take a guy with a scan tool
and some specific knowedge to get a handle on your problem. Take it to the
dealer, give them the $75 or whatever they want to diagnose it, and let the
tech tell you what is wrong with it. I know that you have bled money into
this thing already, but where has it gotten you?

It isn't clear whether you put a new cat, exhaust, O2 sensor in an attempt
to fix this problem, or if those parts are just there. A new aftermarket O2
sensor can absolutely cause this problem. I find a lot of the aftermarket
ones get biased toward a lean reading, which is good if you are trying to
control carbon monoxide, but as CO goes down, NOx tends to go up.

The excessive oil in the filter box is typical, but not a cause for a NOx
failure.

Re: emissions failed texas

Hi!
Check your cooling system - it is probably blocked somewhere. And did you
change PCV Valve (it's very important for emission) and also check EGR
Valve.
