Electrical Problem! Help!!

Hi,

I believe my problem may be related to relays or fuses. I have a 91 yj,
2.5, 5 speed. I went to start it up today and nothing happened. I could
hear the fuel pump kick on and the relays next to the battery tick.
Other than that, there was no sound or turning over at all. Up to this
point the lights on the information board worked along with the gauges.
I then unhooked the battery and check all of the fuses in the fuse box
in the cab and then pulled and checked every large fuse in the fuse box
next to the battery. I also pulled the relays. Everything seems to be
fine. I reattached the battery and now when I go to start it the same
thing happens except now there are no information lights and the gauges
don't work. I hope you may have some suggestions on what to check.
Thank you,

Tim

Re: Electrical Problem! Help!!

I would be checking the starter relay on the firewall by the battery for
a bad or dirty connection. It will be the one that the positive battery
cable goes to.

Re: Electrical Problem! Help!!

Thanks Mike. I checked the relays and all are well. I got the
dashlights and gauges working again by taking out each fuse and
cleaning them. I got the jeep started by taking jumper cables and
attaching the positive to the top pole on the starter and then to the
battery. I put the Jeep in Neutral before doiong so. I then turned it
over and it weakly started up. It ran fine, however, when I turned it
off to restart it, it wouldn't start. I could hear the clicking on the
starter. Any other ideas? Could the connections be dirty? Thanks. Tim

Re: Electrical Problem! Help!!

You are still describing a bad connection on the starter relay or
'solenoid' bolted to the firewall where the positive battery cable goes
to.
