Drove TJ in 4WD on highway... what'd I do?
 
Last year on two different occasions I drove out of the the Arizona
desert onto the highway in 4WD, and forgetting to shift to two wheel
drive, I drove about about 15 miles on paved surfaces until I
discovered my error.

I have an EZ locker in the rear axle.

What damage might I have caused?

It seems I still have four wheel when I need it. Although when all four
wheels are in a rut it seems like the tranny will not lock up in first
gear low range... I have to rock myself out of the problem.

Normally when you do damage by driving like that, the really big bang or
whomp whomp that happens as something explodes or a driveshaft goes
propeller makes it easy to figure....

If you put it into neutral and block the wheels, then you can go under
and twist and shake all the driveshaft u-joints to see if any have gone
bad. If you see rust coming out any cap, that joint is about to be
dead.

You have a chain inside the t-case that likely got a work out, but if it
stretched enough to slip, you should hear that pretty plain.

It could be that you need to adjust the linkage if it won't go all the
way into 1st, but I would also check the engine and tranny mounts to
make sure they aren't the reason it went out of adjustment. If you look
under, you can see the linkage rod and it's set bolt. You can put it
into 1 low and then use a 1/8" drill bit as a spacer from the end when
you set the linkage physically into low from under. That would have it
adjusted.

If you have a body lift, I would also inspect that for movement which
can throw the linkage off. My CJ7 is like that so my clutch linkage is
off. I need to loosen all the bolts and square the body back onto the
frame.
