Drove a 2007 Wrangler X today :-)
 

It was a nice looking gray 6 speed hard top with mag wheels and 16"
tires. I was in for my 30k service for my '04 Wrangler X and the dealer
(actual owner) recognized me. He handed me dealer plates and keys and
told me to drive it around and see what I thought of it. First
impressions. Big, quiet, smooth, plenty of power (6th gear must be warp
drive). The shift and 4WD engaged wery smoothly with a positive feel. I
took it out of his lot the back way, up a grass and dirt slope to the
street behind the dealership in 1st 4WD-hi. Much more ground clearance
than my '04. Other things, the lip where I hit my foot getting in is
gone :-) Nice seats! The soft top folds down out of the way in a very
small roll under the 2 piece hard top and hides behind the rear seat.
The front of the hard top over the front seats is removable. Did I
mention quiet? :-) Almost unnaturally quiet for a Jeep. It's refined to
the point that it's almost un-Jeeplike. The dealer offered to let me
drive the 4dr. I declined. Way to big, but he's already sold two. One
hard top and one soft top. He has yet to sell a 2dr. Go figure!

I'm looking at the lifted 33inch rubber clad four door on the Quadratec
catalog and thinking I'd buy a 2.9L CRD or HEMI Rubicon version... Say
what you will but IMHO it's sharp looking in the classic Jeep boxy
rugged utility mold, and reviews says it's more capable off road out of
the box than a TJ.

BTW that's reviews by JP mag and Four Wheeler mag, not some snobbish
sports car oriented rag like Motor trend.

rugged utility mold, and reviews says it's more capable off road out of

I was just a bit overwhelmed at the difference between it and my '04. I
actually thought my I-6 ran strong and smooth... for a Jeep :-) I trade
every four or five years (just sold my '02 Liberty) and there is nothing
else out there that interests me. Well, if I could get my hands on
Gunny's (Mail Call) ride...:-)

Much of what DC did with the JK had to do with meeting safety standards.
Swapping the I6 for a V6 made for more front crumple room. Moving the gas
tank from the rear gave more rear crumple room.

I drove the V6 '07 at Camp Jeep and it seemed adequate on the trail;
didn't get a road test.

I would prefer a diesel engine in a JK, but with the stricter diesel
emissions in '07 I doubt we'll see it in production soon.

Wait for the aftermarket to ramp up with JK parts. I think we'll be
pleasantly surprised at what the JK can do.

The JK is programmed for a 2.8L 4 Cyl. CRD - same motor as the Diesel
KJ.

Too bad you can't get that V10 Audi Diesel coming soon to a mall-trail
crossover Audi near you. Possibly even California if the urea system
and all works out. Too bad you can't keep the exhaust clean with a more
organic urea injection system--a tube from the drivers seat.
