Distributor Shaft bushings
 

Got another question for the group...
I recently rebuilt my carb and now that the engine sounds 1000% better at
idle, I notice that an already existing "knock" is even more evident. When
I tried to locate the cylinder, I thought it was 1 or 2, but with a
stethoscope (spelling?) it sounds like those and the other lifters are all
fine. However while listening I checked the distributor and it sort of
sounds like there is a rasping kind of rattle under it, in time with the
"knock".

Has anyone heard of or had experience with the distrib shaft bushings going
bad? By the way, the rig is a '75 CJ5, almost completely original, don't
know about the dist though.

The bushings go bad and that causes a definite knocking noise.
Easiest way to tell is pop the cap off and try to move the
rotor side-to-side. If it does then the bushing is worn.

Depending on the distributor you can either press in a new bushing
or just replace the whole unit.

On mine it was easier to replace the whole thing.

I don't know what engine you have but on a 96 4.0L Cherokee I had the shaft
was worn, not the bearings.
