There was a good discussion on another group about this and I believe the consensus was that 'race' cars use the nitrogen tanks to fill tires because it is the cheapest and easiest to get. Re: Darn Tire Pressure sensors
Back in my flying days, we had both T-37s and T-38s on the line. The
Tweet had (relatively) low pressure tires while the 38 used skinny, high pressure rubber. The low pressure ones used plain old air, the high pressure ones got nitrogen. The maintenance manuals gave the reasons for the N2 for the 38 as less degradation of the rubber at the pressure and high temps we ran in those plus safety if one blew after heavy braking - less support for the ensuing fire. I doubt my Jeep could reach the rolling speeds of the T-38 (typically 165 kts or so for takeoff, max 240 kts landing) if I drove it off a cliff while the 100/85 kt speeds of the T-37 are (theoretically) possible - air should be good enough. There is some reasonable argument for using N2 in a spare for the rubber life - but nothing persuasive. Re: Darn Tire Pressure sensors
No scientific proof to back up my claims, just my log book of my racing
days. I was told my other racers who raced a long time that nitrogen doesn't expand and contract as much when the tires heat up. Our stock car tires had to be constantly monitored to keep the tire stagger set at a certain amount for proper handling. Looking at my log books, I see some truth to this. The tires did not grow in diameter as much when we used nitrogen as opposed to compressed air. The tires used by our local tracks for the class of cars I raced were notorious for changing drastically in diameter, but the changes were not consistent from tire to tire for several reasons. This was the biggest benefit of the nitrogen for us, but it was also the fact that the bottle was nice to have there to eliminate the need for a compressor at the track. You could power all your air tools and fill your tires for several weeks on one bottle of nitrogen, Chris "Mike Romain" <romainm@sympatico.ca> wrote in message news:458AA537.A666A4CF@sympatico.ca... >I will have to agree! > > There was a good discussion on another group about this and I believe > the consensus was that 'race' cars use the nitrogen tanks to fill tires > because it is the cheapest and easiest to get.
