Convert to paper air filter, how?
 

I'm working on a CJ2A which I want to convert from the oil bath style
air filter to a disposable paper type. All of the universal air
cleaners I can find are made to mount on top of the carb, which of
course I have no room for that, and don't want to make room for it. I
want to keep the canister style. I'll probably go to the junk yards
and try and find something from some other vehicle, but wondering if
anyone can tell me which vehicle would work well, and look nice?

I saw this one web-site,

says his paper filter housing was in any of these vehicles:
1. Last CJ5's made
2. Ford F1000 pick-ups (never heard of "1000", must be an
international thing, dang metric system)
3. Mercedez Benz 608 small truck

I've been searching for hours now trying to find a confirmation of
this, and looking for on-line parts places to try and see what a new
housing would run, but so far haven't found anything other than a
bunch of Ford trucks with your basic over-carb air cleaner housings.

Any help would be great, and feel free to email me a copy when posting
to the group.

p.s.-I'm not looking for reasons NOT to convert to a paper filter, I
read all 10,000 of those postings and still want to convert to paper.
Also, not looking for the K&N clamp on jobbers, which the local parts
store sales, because I don't want something I have to clean (that's
why I'm getting rid of the oil bath).

Perhaps he meant an F-100, the designation for earlier 1/2 ton Ford pickups.

Perhaps he meant an F-100, the designation for earlier 1/2 ton Ford pickups.

Just to follow-up to my original post, incase anyone finds this thread
and looking for the same answers I was. I never did find that F1000
air cleaner, and after looking at several other models I never found
one that I liked, and that had a reasonable priced replacement filter
(not the housing, the paper filter).

A friend came by this weekend and pointed out that with my Solex carb.
the top 3 inches of the carb. throat was just an extension to make it
as tall as the old Carter unit. So all I had to do was give it a good
tug to get that off, and now I can put a top mounted air cleaner on
there. You know the ones, that they sale at every auto-parts store
for just a few bucks. He was thinking I could go with the smallest
ones, about 4" diam. I think, but I'm thinking of going with the next
size, I think about 6" diam.

Has anyone done this? Is it really okay to remove that top part of
the Solex carb., or is that required for proper air flow?
