Contaminated gas?

I have an '01 TJ 4.0L and filled up (from 1/8th of a tank) at an Esso
outside Quebec City last week. 27 Kms (17 miles?) later the Jeep
stalled and the check engine light came on. Restarted and it ran
really rough and stalled when I tried to move, then the check engine
light started flashing. I couldn't find anything obvious wrong (I'm no
expert), but the exhaust did smell odd.

Error codes: 0353,0352,0351,0300,0303,0304,1391,0305,0306

I was towed to the nearest dealer and they told me A) My gas was
contaminated with diesel and B) the Cam Sensor had to be replaced.
They charged me $230.

I drove back to the Esso and confirmed I had NOT pumped from a diesel
pump, so I filed a complaint and have to contact Esso directly.

Just wanted to get an opinion on whether the Dealer's story sounds
legit before I harp on Esso. Anyone?

Thanks.

Re: Contaminated gas?

Same thing happened to me at an Esso just outside Quebec city a couple
years ago!

I got about 20 miles too before all hell broke loose.

That damn 'dirty' gas ruined my Volvo's engine! The rattling and
knocking broke several piston rings and turned a nice old beast into a
serious smoker.

Had to sell it for junk, it was a nice old 240 wagon with the AC still
even working great, but need some rust work. It was worth $1500.00 with
a good motor, fifty bucks with a blown one.

I was on a return trip from Halifax to Toronto and I will tell you if I
lived closer I would have gone back and raised particular hell.

I know it was the gas because when I got fresh gas in it later in the
day/trip it came back to running 'right' besides the cloud of smoke that
is....

If the dealer will back up your story in writing then go for it.

You got away a lot cheaper than the time I put gas in my diesel truck!

Re: Contaminated gas?

Next time try a bottle of fuel injector or carburetor cleaner.
Doesn't always help, but it's only 89cents and sometimes if the cause
is a small amount of contaminant it can fix the problem. Well worth
the investment to try.

Re: Contaminated gas?

I would think that it would take a lot more than a little bit of diesel in
the tank to make a significant difference......
