Cold Running Problem 1983 CJ-7 258

Problem starting and keeping running until engine warm for years now. Colder
weather, greater the problem. Once engine warm then runs great. Used for
offroad only 1983, CJ-7, 258 cid, Carter 2 barrel 8338 BBD carb, points
distributer has replace electronic ign. by previous owner. All computer
stuff disabled/removed. Manual choke and throttle installed. Cleaned and
rebuilt carb w/new kit. Carb servo unplugged and servo needles fixed in
seated position toward center of carb. Had hope that this would have
corrected the cold running/stalling problem, however, still unable to drive
while cold and simply need to not drive and keep starting after stalling
until engine is warm. What to try next??
Thanks for any help.
Stew

Re: Cold Running Problem 1983 CJ-7 258

This might not fix the root problem but I had all sorts of problems
which were for the most part fixed by a new carb but the problem
totally cleared up when I installed an HEI distributor that I took
from a 73 Chevy van. This vehicle starts in -20 Deg C weather now with
out being plugged in and idles nice after about 30 seconds of running,
before all the work I would crank the engine for ever to get it to
start.

Re: Cold Running Problem 1983 CJ-7 258

Is your electric manifold heater working, how about the heat stove and
flapper in the air intake? As I understand it without these the cold
air/fuel mixture does not stay atomized very well and so doesn't burn very
well either. When the engine is warm the intake manifold is warm from the
warm coolant moving through it and this keeps the mixture well atomized.
There is a website that talks about all of this but I don't remember it.
Someone her likely knows it.

Could be they removed too much 'computer stuff'?

There is a heater just under the carb that turns on until the intake
manifold has hot water running through it. It gets power from the oil
pressure switch that feeds a relay trigger via a thermostat on the back
side of the intake manifold.

Do you have the idle mix screws set right? They are very dependent on
the stepper motor pin positions.

How is the fast idle on the manual choke. When warmed up with the fast
idle cam on the second from top step, you should have 1750 rpm.
