Which clutch to buy?

I have a 304 from a 76 cj7 and I'm using my tranny from a 85cj7. I bought a
clutch set for my 85cj7 (258) not thinking about it, now I'm not sure it
will work because the 304 has a different flywheel. The clutch set for the
76 jeep with a 304 has a different part number than the one for the 85 with
a 258.

Should I return it or try to use it?

Re: Which clutch to buy?

Before you take it back make sure you have at least the right sized
shaft and spline count, and find that on an 10.4 or rare 11 inch disk,
and pressure plate for your wheel: http://www.drivetrain.com/cljep.html

Re: Which clutch to buy?

It is 10 spline I counted it.

My question is this: Do you buy the clutch kit for the motor or for the
transmission?

Re: Which clutch to buy?

I guess I should explain this more:

I have a 304 out of a 1976 jeep. I have a T5 tranny out of a 1985 jeep. I am
putting the T5 behind the 304 and need a clutch. If I go to the part store
and ask for a clutch kit for the 1976 jeep with a 304 here is the specs:
10.4" clutch, 10 spline, 1 1/16" hub......If you get the kit for the 1985
jeep you get this: 10.4" clutch, 10 spline, 1 1/8" hub. The transmission
type is never asked at the part store or on the internet.

With the only difference being the hub, I assume I need the one from the 85,
since the hub is referring to the transmission spline right?

Re: Which clutch to buy?

Explain it to the counter parts person. We always start with the
engine flywheel and pressure plate. Then the transmission for the input
size. An example of a stock '64 406" Ford uses one stick flywheel, and
two pressure plates, and three eleven inch disks just for the Borg
Warner four speed, fine, coarse spline or the bigger Rock Crusher T-10.

Buy the clutch for the trany in your case it has to fit the input shaft on
the trany. By the way I take it that your not interested in my Jeep. A
simple reply from an E-Mail would have been nice. Thank You!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry Jim, you have mail. I just bought another project jeep. One of these
days I might finish one and it won't always be a project...thanks for the
info on the clutch. Sometimes I should just go and check things out before
asking the questions here. You're the first and only person to give me a
definate answer and I appreciate that, but I figured it out all by myself a
few days ago..

Now tell me this: I'm reinstalling the tranny, engine etc....and I found
that I'm missing a dowel that goes between the block and the bellhousing. I
had to drive 15 miles and place an order with the jeep dealer for a 3/8"
tube of metal. That tiny part is holding up my project and I'm sure I have
something lying around that would work. If it wasn't for the fact that the
bolts run through the dowel, I would have used a bolt neck with head and
threads cut off. Is there anything I can use or do I have to wait a week
until the dealer gets my $3 part in.

definate answer and I appreciate that, but I figured it out all by myself a
few days ago..
