CJ8 Tranny and xfer case swap

I am trying to get my CJ8 (258) back up and running. I have a pathetic T-5
and Dana 300 transfer case. I have access to a 76 or 77 T150 and Dana 20
transfer case and a T-18 tranny. Will the T-18 bolt up to the D300? Or
would the T-150 and D20 work in the CJ8? Would drive shaft length be a
concern?

Thanks

chris

Re: CJ8 Tranny and xfer case swap

Hmmm... I rather like my T-5 tranny and Dana 300 combo.

The Mustang V8 boys also like the same T-5 tranny in their rides....

My 258 goes like a scalded cat and will light up the tires in 1st and
2nd And bury the spedo in 4th and the Dana 300 shifts like a dream at
any speed in and out of 4 high.

Re: CJ8 Tranny and xfer case swap

My current T-5's first synchro is just about gone and I have no third gear.
If I could find a replacement I'd be glad to keep my 5 speed. I did find a
T-5 out of a 1986(?) Mustang. If I knew that would work, I'd jump on it!

Just looking at the pictures, (no experience with the Dana 300) at
the transfer mounting areas, I would say there're no way of bolting the
Dana 300 to a Borg Warner T-18. It's in bunch of transmissions that
bolted the main drive gear on their output shafts to fit inside the Dana
18 and 20 transfers.

Big differences in Ford case, input, output and tail housing. Throw
a set of sync rings in your T-5, and fix your clutch linkage.

If your T-5 must be rebuilt, I think you will find that rebuilding it will cost
more that the cost to buy the T-18, the adapter and other necessary parts to
mate the T-18 to the Dana 300. If it is a Ford T-18, the length of the
tranny and Advance Adapters adapter will be the same length as the T-5 so no
driveshaft modifications will be required. (Don't know about the Jeep T-18.)

I would forget about using the Dana 20 transfer case. Low range is only 2:1,
whereas the Dana 300 is 2.62:1. There are other installation issues as well.

The pros of a T-18 - it is substantially stronger than a T-5, and if it has the
6.32:1 1st gear you will substantially increase your crawl ratio.

The only negative to the T18 is that you will not have an overdrive 5th gear.
(I swapped to a T-19 - same as T-18 but with synchro in 1st - but because mine
is primarily a trail rig and not a freeway flyer I have seldom missed 5th
gear.)

You need to determine if it is a Ford or Jeep T-18, and what 1st gear ratio you
have. (the 6.32:1 is most desirable and also the most rare).

I think it would be worthwhile for you to contact Advance Adapters for their
catalog and installation guide. You might also want to contact Novak
Engineering in Utah. AA and Novak are the gurus of tranny swaps. They should
be able to answer all of your questions and supply everything you need for the
swap.

Yes there is. But you will need an adapter from Advance Adapters or Novak. It
is a slick swap because the length of the T-18 with adapter is the same as the
Jeep T-5 with factory adapter so no driveline mods are necessary. I had my
T-5 out, the T-19 in, and the job finished in 1/2 day.

[note: T-19 is just a T-18 with synchro 1st)

$489.00 for adaptor from Novack, I think I would rebuild what you have
there.

Last quote I heard from a local gear/tranny shop for rebuilding a worn out T-5

I found someone here that will do my T-5 for just over cost of the parts.

Thanks for the info!

Re: CJ8 Tranny and xfer case swap

I am not sure, but I think that the D300 tcase is about as good a unit as
you will find anywhere.

I have a NP435 trans wedged in between my engine and my D300. The 435 has a
1st gear ratio of 6.69:1. If I had a 4:1 kit in my D300, I would have a
crawl ratio of nearly 110. Almost too low to be useful. With the standard
2.6 ratio of LO range, I have a crawl ratio of 75. when in LO range, and in
1st gear, I can wrap the engine to the red line, and I still can not shift
into 2nd faster than it takes to coast to a stop.

Your CJ8 has plenty of room under it, and you can put in just about
anything.

You can buy the parts to fix the current trans for about $150. I would look
into fixing in myself before I thought about pitching it for something new.
