CJ8 registered as CJ7

I am about to buy a Scrambler and just ran the title check through
AutoCheck. Everything came back fine, except for one thing.... the
VIN seems to show it everywhere as a CJ7, not a CJ8.

I was wondering, is this common due to the similarities between the
models? Current Scrambler owners: Does the VIN system and DMV
computers frequently refer to your vehicle as a CJ7? Or is this
unusual/suspicious, suggesting that it's some kind of rebuilt salvage
of a CJ8 body on a CJ7 frame?

I would talk with your Department of Motor Vehicles. There just too
many instances of a totaled registration being used with a stolen
vehicle. They don't tell you where the ten serial numbers are hidden,
you'll have to let them inspected it.

Compare the VIN on the firewall and the driver's side below the door. These
two VINs should match the VIN on the windshield washer motor and the
documents. If all VINs match, then don't worry that the model is wrong.

Get a corrected title if at all possible. Some DMV types and
insurance companies have extreme difficulty dealing with logic,
and if the numbers don't all match up properly, you may have
trouble with registration and insurance, particularly if
you try to move it from state to state. This happens even
if it is an obvious error, as in the manufacturer didn't even
MAKE that freakin model that year. It could be a simple
error at AutoCheck tho... what you care about is the title
and the old registration info.

Re: CJ8 registered as CJ7

All they care about is that the VIN match. The model for my Jeep is CJ, body
style is UTIL.

It is a useful exercise to make sure that all of the VINs all match other,
and that they match the title and registration, but the model designation
isn't very important. The DMV will make the model correction when asked.

Re: CJ8 registered as CJ7

As I mentioned in my other post, I would be suspicious.

Have a 'close' look at the VIN plates. A 'real' one will have hex
shaped rivets holding it on. If the rivets are round, the plate(s) has
been switched from another vehicle.

The 'real' rivets are only available from the MTO when they certify say
a 'glass' body swap and add the VIN tags for you.

Round rivets are a red flag for police, they suspect a stolen vehicle
immediately.

A few places I've seen before:
Dash, Engine block, transmission hump, frame rail, fire wall, diff, floor pan.

The police will run VINs to check for stolen vehicles.
