CJ7 Front Oil Seal Replacement
I just replaced the timing chain and gears on my 85 CJ7 (258). That went fairly easily. The oil seal in the timing cover was baked into the cover. I have managed to scrap all of the remains out of the cover. Any advice on getting the new seal into place? The hole opening is about 2" in diameter and the gasket is like 2.25" in Diameter. I have soaked the gasket in oil overnight and it still won't fit. I'm starting to lose my patience :o)
I'm wondering if I need a new timing cover, but I will probably have the same issue. Maybe I need to take it to a shop with a seal press? Thanks for any help! Doug |
Re: CJ7 Front Oil Seal Replacement
Hi Doug,
You're confusing me when you say "scrap" because we pull the seal out of the front of the cover in it's ring housing. And there is no gasket used with this seal, it is pressed into position. Which is fairly easy to do seeing you have it off, still I hope. Use a flat piece of steel to drive it in evenly with a hammer if you don't have the tool. After you have replaced the seal use your pulley to center the cover before tightening it down as like the picture at: http://www.----------.com/fOilSeal.jpg God Bless America, ßill O|||||||O mailto:-------------------- Doug wrote: > > I just replaced the timing chain and gears on my 85 CJ7 (258). Re: CJ7 Front Oil Seal Replacement
Are you sure you removed all of the old seal? It sounds like you just tore
the rubber lip seal from the steel backing cup that it's bonded to. Take a good look at what you're putting in and what you scraped out. I think you'll find you still have the old seal in the cover. The only thing you could have scraped out is the remains of some RTV you're supposed to put on the outside of the metal ring to help it to seal. Make sure you didn't leave the metal ring of the old seal in the timing cover. You may need to buy a seal puller. They're pretty cheap, but quite invaluable when it comes to these jobs. -- Michael White "To protect people from the effects of folly is to fill the world with fools." -Herbert Spencer, 1891 |
