Come to think about it, his newer '83 CJ probably came with an alternator
from the factory, not a generator as older CJs did... so it likely would
have come with a voltmeter and not an ammeter.

Re: CJ volt gauge

Hi Allen,
I think it may have been converted to an ampere gauge, and that
those large wires are hooked between your battery and everything else,
like a Real Jeep, so that it signals the charging of your alternator and
the power used by your accessories and lights and looks like:
http://www.stewartwarner.com/Images/82200.gif with a big jumper between
it's connection posts. Because the your '83 should have been wired like:
http://www.monsterslayer.com/jeep/Gauges.htm with a small wires hooked
to voltage gauge, just enough to monitor the voltage between ignition
and ground using a gauge looks like this:

Re: CJ volt gauge

You need to check with a multimeter.

With it running, put the meter on the battery to see what's there and on
the big red wire and ground on the alternator and see what it is putting
out.

A battery with a cell going dead will spike the alternator voltage high.

An alternator with a blown diode on the regulator also can spike the
voltage high. Usually by one volt or so.

Re: CJ volt gauge

Yes, that fat Yel wire goes into the back of the voltmeter. My CJ also
reports that it is cranking out juice in the 16v range.
