CJ-7 Starter
Getting ready to change my starter out tonight. It's really grindy sounding
and has been slipping on the first start. Does it sound like changing the starter will solve my problems and what should I consider if I do change the starter? -- 2CJs '82 258 CJ-7 O|||||||O http://arvin.homestead.com/files/websignature.jpg http://users.mo-net.com/arvin |
Re: CJ-7 Starter
Ouch!
That happened to me with a 2 year old starter that had a 5 year warranty. The nose cone bushing went AWOL and it was making a slight grind sometimes when starting. When I took out the starter I was kicking myself for not pulling it immediately after the first grind.... I had no ring gear left. Re: CJ-7 Starter
Normally, with emphasis on normally, the starter is a stand alone repair.
There is nothing else that is related that should be considered at the same time. You might want to take a look at the gear on the starter itself, and if it is real ugly, then take a close look at the flywheel too. The starter gear engages the edge of the flywheel, and there are times when the starter can eat the teeth on the flywheel. It is rare, but it has been known to happen. The flywheel can take loads of abuse, and it does, so don't worry about rounded edges and that sort of thing, what you are looking for is broken teeth.
