Cherokee reversing lights

Hi
I have a 1997 Cherokee which has suddenly developed a fault on the reversing
lights, basically they don't work in reverse. I've checked the b ulbs they
are ok any ideas.

Also does anyone know where you can purchase a rear wheel carrier in the UK

Re: Cherokee reversing lights

Well, I'd try the fuse, the reversing selector switch and the wiring.
For the "rear wheel carrier" do you mean a bumper mounted one ? If you are
after aftermarket stuff, try Lighthouse Jeep
http://www.ampar.com/lighthousejeepparts.html , EDM
http://www.edm-jeep.co.uk/contactus.htm or Specialist Leisure
http://www.specialist-leisure.co.uk/contact.htm . The latter are expensive.
If you are looking to import from the US try www.quadratec.com . Shipping is
cheapest if you can find someone that will ship BAX Global.

Re: Cherokee reversing lights

You have the common problem of the neutral start safety switch contacts
failing, the link at the bottom will show you how to go about fixing the
problem.

Get out the old cheap copy of Haynes and look in the wiring diagram section,
it has a really good schematic of the switch wires.

Look on the rear passenger side of the fire wall, right around the tranny
dip stick, you should have one maybe two harnesses running down towards the
underside, one of these harnesses will have 5-6 wires and a rectangular
connector. If you have the Haynes or any other schematic of the system (or
a valid email, will send) you can match up the colour code.

If you want to temporarily bypass the switch for addition trouble shooting
and short term use of vehicle (i.e. to use the Jeep to run and buy beer for
the rest of the fix) I would suggest doing all bypassing on the switch side
of the before mentioned connector, as a new switch (or replacement from a
wrecker) will have the harness.

At about $350 cdn ($300 usd) I don't think you really want to buy one from
the stealership, so read this and have fun.

Re: Cherokee reversing lights

One thing to think about is that spare tire carriers in the U.S. open
towards the right. That is away from traffic and down hill, on most crowned
roads. Gravity then helps keep them open, so they don't get in the way when
you open the lift gate. However, you folks drive on the wrong side of the
road, and a U.S. spare tire carrier is going to open the wrong way for you,
into traffic and up hill.
