Charcoal Canister
Can I ditch this thing in my 83 CJ? My O2 sensor is not hooked up (and still
runs like a champ!). What all goes through this thing? Allen |

What all goes through this thing? It's the centerpiece of the evaporative emissions system and should not be eliminated. It vents fumes from the tank and the carb float bowl. |

Hi Allen,
If it ever will have to pass SMOG again, I'd keep it. The Canister controls the gasoline vapors from the carburetor float bowl and fuel tank via solenoid purge and positive crankcase ventilation valves: http://www.----------.com/canister.jpg God Bless America, ßill O|||||||O mailto:-------------------- ABanks5@columbus.rr.com wrote: > > Can I ditch this thing in my 83 CJ? Re: Charcoal Canister
The short answer is 'yes'. But I wouldn't. The Jeep will wreak like gasoline
and you still need a way to vent the float bowl. > From: <ABanks5@columbus.rr.com> > Organization: Road Runner High Speed Online http://www.rr.com > Newsgroups: rec.autos.makers.jeep+willys > Date: Wed, 03 Dec 2003 03:35:08 GMT > Subject: Charcoal Canister > > Can I ditch this thing in my 83 CJ? Re: Charcoal Canister
When mine went bad, the Jeep did a great impression of running out fo gas
once presure started building up. Mike Romain was a great help when I was trying to determine what to do about mine. If you get rid of it, you might as well drive without a gas cap, otherwise as the pressure builds your Jeep will start bucking like a Bronco. <ABanks5@columbus.rr.com> wrote in message news:MRczb.3075$Lr6.372@fe1.columbus.rr.com... > Can I ditch this thing in my 83 CJ? Re: Charcoal Canister
It is a vent for the gas tank and carb float bowl.
It is activated charcoal that stores the fumes when it sits, then purges the fumes into the PCV system when you are running at speed. It has an air filter on the bottom that needs changing now and then. The filter is only a couple bucks but the first one is a real bugger to dig out. You literally have to dig it out, then a new one tucks back in. I needed a hammer and chisel to get mine out it was so full of baked on mud. You 'can' run without it, but then the gas tank has to vent to the open air and man it will reek of gas fumes.
