Brake Squeaks ??
Just had front brakes re-done, with new ceramic pads and turned rotors. They work fine. Rear brakes were done about 15k ago, and they seem to work fine. (My understanding and experience is the rear brakes last much longer than the front). The braking in general is fine. Now, I am on an extended vacation, and my brakes squeak when I depress the brake pedal. When I press down very hard (hard braking) the squeak goes away. I cannot tell if the sound comes from the front or rear. Again, my brakes seem to be working fine, with no pulling either way, and the stopping power seems good, and even. It will be several weeks before I will be back home, and could take the car to my regular mechanic, who always does a good job for me. Yet, I am am curious if I should have a stranger check my brakes to see if there is a problem. Questions: What is the likely culprit causing the squeak? I have heard of "brake dressing." What is it, and when is it needed ? Thanks for any helpful comments !!!!!!!!!!! --James-- |

Hi James,
The squeak is probably normal for the grade of pad you have, you may see the difference in materials Raybestos sells: http://www.raybestos.com/usa/brakepads.htm The cheaper pads usually have a silicone like stuff to paste to the back side of their pads to dampen them or just a paper spacer. Your brakes should have had a little spring thingie pictured: http://www.----------.com/WJCaliber.jpg stock from the factory that many of us just forget, that it's only purpose is to stop squeal. What I have done to stop squeal is take the pads out and scrap them on the drive way at about forty five degrees on the lead edge, that's low side, and that stops it. I've never heard of brake shoes squealing, just a sanding sound or metal to metal sound if they've thrown a shoe. Might give them a quick inspection. Re: Brake Squeaks ??
Hi James,
Sounds like if you rebuild the piston and lube the slide like Doug suggested you'll be find. You know there will always be a drag with that type of caliber. Drag racers need that horse power so convert to the two piston or the four piston '68 Mustang calibers: http://www.----------.com/68MustangCaliber.jpg Ask your local speed shop for installation instructions.
