Blend air door replacement

All,

01 Grand Cherokee:
Dealer says blend air door is hosed and needs to be replaced. Im
wondering what a reasonable charge for this work is. Also indicating
"may need to replace evap coil..but we wont know until we get in
there". They want 1100 for just the blend air door.

On a side note..this car has 70K miles on it. Over the summer, the
wiring harness for the electronics for the HVAC system "melted down"
fusing itself into the plastic casing cause 400 bucks in damage. Now,
based on what the dealer wants to charge, Im looking at probably 1500
to 2Gs in the past 3 months on HVAC issues. Is this "normal"?

BTW...first time post- please forgive (and redirect) if this is not the
right newsgroup.

thanks

Re: Blend air door replacement

A "blend door" is probably a cheap piece of plastic, that you wouldn't
want to spend even $5.00 for. Nevertheless, according to another
thread where the owner had an evaporator replaced, the price you are
quoted seems to be in line. They bury the business end of HVAC systems
under the dash, in the hardest of places to get to, and there isn't
much that you as an owner can do about it. If the blend door is bad,
there has to be a reason for it. A pencil fell in the dash opening?
Chances are, that the housing that it sits in, and the servo that moves
it, could be bad too.

This is a good newsgroup for stuff like this. I am sorry that I don't
have a cheap, quick fix for your problem though.

Mike Romain said this in 2004 when someone else had this problem: (google

There is a known problem with the blend doors. They have a new design
to replace the broken one.
