Axle seal replacement w/ one-piece kit?
Hey Everyone,
I got a good deal on an AMC 20 rear with a Superior kit already installed. Before i put it in my CJ8 i want to replace things that are easier with it on my workbench instead of waiting until they fail. Brakes, hardware, etc. What am i going to see on this setup that's different than the stock axle seal replacement? After doing so many seals on my friend's bent model 20, we have that down to a half-hour job. Thanks, Don W |

I dunno about your stuff but when I bought new axle bearings and seals for
my D44, they were the new one piece unit with O rings on the outside diameter. Supposedly they are better. I have yet to pull the axle shafts and do the r&r though. I've got an AMC 20 on my CJ8, and the biggest pain is removing the brake lines. Other than that, it's four or five bolts then 30 seconds with a seal puller. -- Michael White "To protect people from the effects of folly is to fill the world with fools." -Herbert Spencer, 1891 |

Re: Axle seal replacement w/ one-piece kit?
I put a Superior one piece kit in my 76 CJ5 resto project last year. The
previous owner / butcher of the CJ had left the hub on the left side loose for so long it had nearly sheared the woodruff key off. Took a lot of effort to get the hub & axle shaft out. The Superior kit looked about as good as any of the kits out there. As I recall it used an inner seal pressed into the axle tube and a one piece outer seal molded to a plate. which attached to the brake backing plate bolts. I can't remember if it had any o-rings, don't think it did. One problem we had with it is that the thing had been so poorly maintained that the old outer bearing had damaged the seating surface inside the axle tube. To get the correct spacing we shimmed the new bearing races with motorcycle piston rings which fit just right inside the tube. So far after over 10k miles it's going fine, no leaks etc. "Kevin in San Diego" <kevin_hedstrom@yahoo.com> wrote in message news:n4c8b.51903$Qy4.4495@fed1read05... > I dunno about your stuff but when I bought new axle bearings and seals for > my D44, they were the new one piece unit with O rings on the outside > diameter.
