Axle click on AMC 20
Hi guys,
My CJ's AMC 20 makes a click in the left rear out near the wheel whenever I go from forward to reverse or reverse to forward and put a small load on it. I'm assuming it's the two-piece design of the axle shafts and if I swap in new one piecers it'll fix the problem. What are the best ones and where can I get 'em? Pete -- '84 CJ7 with factory rebuilt 360, NV4500, Edelbrock carb & intake, headers, 2.5" duals, homemade on-board air, etc... '04 Audi S4 that's bone stock |

Superior Gear and Moser make a good one-piece axle. I'm not sure, but maybe
Summers Bros. makes them also. There was a time when Moser built theirs with ball bearings, but they were not very good. Now Moser uses a roller bearing that is much better than the ball bearings they formerly used. Superior also uses a roller bearing. There is a company out of Corona, CA., that sells one-piece axle sets. They are either DrivetrainsDirect or DrivelinesDirect. With a AMC 20 the first place you want to ALWAYS look is make sure that the axle hub "gland" nut is tight because it is what keeps hub tightly on splines. If it turns out loose, you should torque it and if noise persists THEN pull hub and inspect splines and after that brake hardware. If it is snog, pull hub and inspect splines and then brake hardware. While the AMC 20 is basically a stout axle it suffers from a weak hub when used in a 4x4 with a lift and big tires. Generally they tend to hold up for a while IF nut is kept tight and tires are not too big. As someone else mentioned there is a after market one piece axle replace kit for it that when installed makes it a fairly bullet proof rear axle up to 35's or so. ----------------- TheSnoMan.com |
