AX-15 smoothness?

I just bought an 87 YJ with a supposedly rebuilt AX-15. The tranny
seems a bit clunky between gears, not real smooth, it seems I have to
pause a bit between gears to let the synchros engage. I don't hear any
grinding. Is this normal for an AX-15?

Thanks

Re: AX-15 smoothness?

First determine what you have for a transmission:
http://www.off-road.com/jeep/swb/articles/specgrid.htm Although it could
have been converted.
You may have a sychro problem, but usually with the early YJs the
hydraulic clutch fails to completely disengage.

So you still have the french slave, it's bleeder, is access from
the passenger side bellhousing: http://www.----------.com/YJslave.jpg
And see after bleeding if shifting is any easier.

Re: AX-15 smoothness?

Thanks I will try that. I assume the process is similar to brakes...
loosen... press...tighten...repeat

Re: AX-15 smoothness?

Yup, and like brakes don't let the reservoir run dry, and there's
sometimes a loop that runs above the master that sometimes holds an air
pocket, that I bend down and crack that fitting and find bubbles.

Re: AX-15 smoothness?

Make sure it has the correct fluid in it - GL3 not GL5 ( I think the sulphur
eats the brass synchros). Or use Redline MT90.
