Anyone in the Ontario Canada area up for a New Years bush run?

I am heading out tomorrow, Jan 1 2004 for 4 or 5 days south of the
Bancroft area north of Kingston Ontario.

Short notice, sorry but I just got the ok last night to go.

I will be running logging/snowmobile trails that are dual/multi use and
have permission to stay in a few hunt camps in the area.

The trails are suited for any stock or better 4x4 and there is excellent
ice fishing or winter fishing anyway.

Running on 'winter' logging skidder roads can be fun. Those suckers
have 6' tall tires and can make 'interesting' trails. LOL!

For those that have been along before, I am heading for the Whitefish
lake area where we summer camp. The loggers are working that end of the
trail this year. I plan on being within a 2 mile radius of that lake in
one of the camps.

If anyone is interested in coming in for the weekend or even meeting up
with me tomorrow email me and let me know. I have GPS tags for the lake
and could easily come out Friday night to meet up with folks at the
trail head.

Re: Anyone in the Ontario Canada area up for a New Years bush run?

Does anybody on this list have any co-ordinates, waypoints, GPS tracks,
whatever for the area Mike Romain is in at the moment? There's a few of us
here in Kingston Ontario who are wanting to hit the bush tomorrow and I'm
thinking it'd be nice to look him up if we can. I've been in the area with
Mike once before - my first off-road trip ever a couple of years ago, but
that was without a GPS or topo maps.

Re: Anyone in the Ontario Canada area up for a New Years bush run?

Aw geese Peter...

I ended up in the same camp we used the time you came in. The loggers
had collapsed the dam at the other trail head, so I came way around to
the south like we did on that long run rather than the rough one.

I guess I should start CC'ing everyone on my email list instead of using
BCC. I started that due to too many viruses hitting email lists.

My wife was home here until Sat night when she came in to join me and
she was watching for emails from anyone looking for directions. To get
to the original spot I mentioned below, Whitefish, you had to pass me
where I was camped. It just took 4 extra hours to get to from the dam
if you came in the west trail head...

the south like we did on that long run rather than the rough one.

Re: Anyone in the Ontario Canada area up for a New Years bush run? TripReport!

I got out for a couple days for the New Year and cruised around some
bush trails.

It was really icy with almost no snow. Sorry I missed meeting up with
Peter, I will change my email list to CC folks instead of BCC them
because lots of folks, even my wife at home (she was checking email)
could have given directions.

My wife came up by bus Sat. so we stayed until Monday and had a nice
time. There were lots of ATVs and other 4x4's on the trails and a few
'big' logging trucks. The loggers run on CB so we don't have any
conflicts on the trails, we all talk before heading out.

The one trail head I was aiming for was closed due to loggers collapsing
a bridge less than 2 miles from the lake I was aiming for. Grr..., so
drove around 4 hours to the other trail head which didn't really hurt my
feelings, it was all bush roads. Had a nice time. Had to dodge some
big white tail deer, but missed them, the ditch and a photo, 3 times....

Got a couple of a beaver working away and a couple of the trails.

The trails were glass ice and almost impossible to walk on, so the
pucker factor was sure up there in a few spots. One place in particular
my wife was commenting on the wicked angle it is running at made me
laugh as I pointed to the dent in the ditch beside me and said oh, see
that hole, the CJ made that a couple years ago when it flipped into
there. See where the nice logger used his skidder to plow me a parking
spot when he dragged it out. LOL!

Coming home was a bit of a trip. It was -10C and freezing rain. The
stuff was freezing onto the windshield before the wipers could get it
off. Even with my big heater blower motor I only had a hole about the
size of a letter envelope to see out of for a couple hours.

I have posted photos over on alt.binaries.pictures.autos.4x4 and also at
Sony's Imagestation.

Sounds like a very interesting time!
I'll have to try to look at the pics from work - if I go in the rest of the week. We
got sent home at 1130 due to the so called blizzard conditions (it was cold, it was
slick, and it was snowing, but I wouldnt have called it a blizzard).

Re: Anyone in the Ontario Canada area up for a New Years bush run? Trip Report!

Sounds like a very interesting time!
I'll have to try to look at the pics from work - if I go in the rest of the week. We
got sent home at 1130 due to the so called blizzard conditions (it was cold, it was
slick, and it was snowing, but I wouldnt have called it a blizzard).
