all right time for some 4WD questions
I just took the beater out on my old logging road to see what it can do.
Didn't get far before the all season stock size tires let me down on a sharp but small incline. The ground is covered in wet leaves and right under them some relatively firm dirt. I was pretty damn disappointed as I lost traction and then got _barely_ stuck (really just had no traction in that spot and got unstuck easily) as the wheels settled into some existing ruts. I noticed that only the rear tire was actually spinning... nothing from the front. I tried 4H and 4L and neither seemed to get me anything from the front tires. The crank case seems to shift fine, I could tell from the difference in RPM vs Speed that I was obviously in 4L, 4H and 2wd when I shifted and no odd noises. So why didn't I get anything from the front wheels? This is an 88 YJ with d30 and d35. |
Re: all right time for some 4WD questions
Your front hubs arent locking? Is it a vacuum type front axle?

Re: all right time for some 4WD questions
I had a 88YJ that had the same problem.
Turned out to be a leaking vacuum hose that engages the autolocking hubs. Re: all right time for some 4WD questions
There are vacuum lines running to the axle on the passenger side.
Sounds like one is off or broken. Those lines also run 'real' close to the exhaust pipe and I have seen a few that got melted back near the transfer case. One other thing, if you only have one wheel spinning, you can bang on the brake pedal while giving it gas and when you load up the spinning wheel with the brake, the torque needed to turn the wheel will equal the torque needed to break the not moving wheel loose from the ground. That way you can get both back wheels and if you are really good all 4 spinning. Even with open diffs. My owners manual mentions that using the e-brake can do the same, but I have had better luck punching/pulsing the brake pedal hard.
