Are all 231 Transfer Cases the same?

I know someone selling a 231 transfers case that he said was meant for a
Jeep Liberty, would this work in my '89 Cherokee that use the same model
despite the fact that the transmissions are different?

I can tell you from having been there that differences DO exist.
NP231's that came behind a Puegot BA 10/5 5-spd have different input
shafts than those behind the AX5, AX15, or the newer 3550 (or whatever
the number). I can't say what the autos used but there is definitely
a difference in the ones behind the manuals. $1 - 200 for the part,
PITA to change but doable under the tree.
