Advice needed with a Ham Radio Antenna on a TJ.
Have any of you had any luck operating a mobile ham radio station (2 Meter
and 70 Cm) from a soft top TJ? I know I'll need to shell out some cash to get a decent antenna / mount, thats not a problem. What I wanted to know is if any of you Jeepers out there have had experience with this type of installation and what works well before I go out buying parts and drilling holes in my 02 Jeep Wrangler Sport. Quadratec sells an antenna mount that is installs underneath the driverside tail light. Does is work well? If I buy it and try it, after drilling two holes in the corner of my Jeep to install it, and find out it doesn't work worth a damn, I'll be more than mad. What type of set up are you running and what signal reports are you getting? Thank in advance for any insight that you may provide. John An avid Reader of RAMJAW. 02 Solar Yellow TJ W2SPL |

I have a Diamond dual band 2m/70cm antenna on a Comet trunk lip mount on the
top edge of the tailgate. It does very well in that position with no signal complaints on simplex or through distant repeaters. I also have a Motorola ball mount on the pass. side rear fender for a 10m/11m whip. Likewise it does very well in that location. I looked at the mount from Quadratec you mentioned and decided that it would probably be too lightweight for my application and that I also was considering other taillight options that would not be compatible. Also, I may get a Wilderness rack and that would likely interfere as well. I will post some pics if you want to know how it looks. Re: Advice needed with a Ham Radio Antenna on a TJ.
The local ham shop sold me univeral lip mount that i used on the side of the
hood. All the wires go through the firewall, and no need to route all around the car. Easy and clean, works very well.
