Advice on JGC Purchase
 

Hello Jeep experts

Just wanted some off the cuff advice from the pros on a JGC Ltd my
wife has her eye on.

It's a 1998 Limited 5.2 with 100,000 miles. Looks very clean indeed.
Full load gold package. Purchasing retail with 2 year warranty for
about $10,000US (I'm in Canada).

I was a bit concerned about the high mileage and the durability of
this engine/transmission. I will have it gone over by a Jeep mechanic
prior to signing, but assuming engine compression is good and no major
problems are found, does this seem like a good deal?

Or do you think I'd be better off saving some money by getting her a
Cherokee Sport with the 4.0L?

I own a 2000 classic cherokee with 49500 miles and perfect for 12100 and
have a 1988 cherokee limited with 178000 miles. both run excellent with no
troubles except to replace the cps on the 88(23.00)
unless you intend to pull a trailer a lot, i think the 93 to 2002 cherokees
are absolutly the best.

I own a 2000 classic cherokee with 49500 miles and perfect for 12100 and
have a 1988 cherokee limited with 178000 miles. both run excellent with no
troubles except to replace the cps on the 88(23.00)
unless you intend to pull a trailer a lot, i think the 93 to 2002 cherokees
are absolutly the best.

JGC vs JC

I think the 98 GC was a vintage year. It is a much smoother more
comfortable ride than the cherokee. (I have both a 98 cherokee and an 01
GC), if that is an important consideration for you. The jeep v8 engine, at
least in the new 4.7L is much smoother with less vibration than the inline
4.0L, especially when the a/c compressor cycles on and off. The 5.2L will
be a gas guzzler, but otherwise it sounds like a good buy esp. with the 2 yr
warranty.

'95 inferno red ZJ/GC far better than the Cherokee, Ford Exploder,
Toyota, etc. I was looking at. I must admit it has sorta grown
on me as being a very good combo highway cruiser and light
offroad machine.

Make sure the CV joints and transfer cases are in great shape,
although they aren't that out of line in repair costs any more
than any other 4x4. As important as engine, etc. check is
the auto A/C system. Run it in auto and play with the temp
controls and make sure it adjusts the fan speed and air flow
properly. Also check the A/C condenser for rust. And test
the brakes to make sure they have no pulsing indicating an over
torque that can warp a rotor. That engine will run forever
plus a few miles after that. If you can't get service records,
just swap all the fluids and have that done by someone who
knows the GC well, as some axles require friction modifier
and some don't.
