Advice on buying an '88 Cherokee?

Hi all,
I'm thinking of purchasing a 1988 Jeep Cherokee. It's an automatic trans.
with 159k miles, driven regularly (not daily, more like weekly) by the
current owner. It's in reasonable cosmetic shape, but I'm not concerned
with that.
I'm more concerned with what to look for mechanically for warning signs
(and where to look for them). Could anybody offer advice on this?
I've owned a '90 Laredo 5-speed and a '90 Wrangler 5-speed, but I'm
concerned about the auto transmission as well as main seal leaks, etc.
etc.

Please feel free to follow up to my post or email me off list at
ajcohen@concentric.net.

Thanks very much!

this is a pure AMC Jeep, which gives it many advantages over the
chrysler muck-up versions which came later. The automatic tranny is an
aisin, I believe, which Jeep mechanics have told me is the "best." My '87,
also pure AMC, is like brand-new.

Be realistic in your expectations, It is an 88 and you will need to
replace some things. Look for rust in unexpected areas, check under the
rear seats under the carpet, floors rust thru they also rust above the
cat. If you want some more detailed advice head over to
