Add rear speakers to Infinity Gold stereo system
 

I purchased a speaker box to drop in the back of my 95 ZJ, which has the
Infinity Gold CD stereo system, and was wondering if anyone could give me
advice on the best way to connect it to the existing amp.

I was thinking of just tapping into the rear speaker outputs but cannot find
any information on which those would be. The speakers have a 300W rating and
have no amp. I thought I would just ask before I start ripping stuff apart
(I don't know why, it never stopped me in the past!?)

Kinda depends. You only mention one speaker box... is this
a sub or separate left and right speakers?

If you just replace the rear speakers, tap the wiring at the
output of the two connectors on the amp before they get to
the door in such a manner that the in door speakers are
disabled. Putting them in series tends to make it sound
worse than the worst speaker. Putting them in parallel
can overload the amp, and if the speakers are not
exact matches, result in no sound from the box or none
from the door [whichever is higher impedance and by
how much]. Worse, the answer may be different at
different frequencies so the sound wanders all over
the place.

Or if you add an amplifier, tap the high level input
to the amp.

Wiring diagrams are best in the Body Diagnostic manual,
a whole $6.00 from tech authority.

I was afraid ya'll would say that. Money is the issue currently. I was
checking out www.crutchfield.com and they have some awesome stereo's
available. I am saving my pennies, though, because my wife needs a new
car --er - Jeep. We're going to look for another JGC, I believe.

I really like the setup you have. You appear to enjoy a little thumping in
the back of your Jeep, too. It's been awhile since I replaced a car stereo.
How did you go about picking out the components to put together that hefty
system?

Yea, I bet it does rock your JGC. At first, when looking at the specs, I
thought that was a little overkill, then I came to my senses :)

Anyway, I figured out which wires run to the rear speakers (in case anyone
is interested it is the tan wires with the red and black stripe for the
right rear and the white wires with the red and black stripe for the left
rear) so I went ahead and hooked the speakers up by using wire connectors
that, when crimped, splice into both wires.

I am happy to note that so far I didn't blow up anything, and they sound
pretty darn good to boot! Meanwhile I will keep dreaming of amping up my
JGC. When I get ready to do some real mods I may email you with some
questions if you don't mind, though.

Listen,you need an additional amp with Hi/Lo inputs.
You tap into your rear speaker wires and run them into
the amp(hi inputs).

Thanks, I am sure I will check stuff out with some auto stereo stores when
I get serious because I plan on replacing everything and don't have a lot of
knowledge about properly matching stereos with amps and speakers (or did you
figure that out :) Thanks for permission to contact you with a few
questions, though, because I just don't trust everything sales people tell
you. It seems so difficult to find knowledgeable sales people anymore.

That's why you visit the custom audio shops.

It took a long time to figure out what parts to use. You might start by
reading the car audio magazines, lots of insane ideas.

Also consider sound deadening, this is where doing it yourself will save
big money. Google for deadmat or dynamat

You could be, yes. The amp is designed to put out 120 watts into
whatever the standard speaker impedance is. If you just replace
that speaker, is a fairly good idea to do so with one rated at
the same nominal impedance. If you parallel another speaker on,
the load on the amp doubles if the new speaker has the same
impedance as the original. This may cause things to pop or just
overheat which shortens lifetime.

NO,NO,NO
the additional amplifier supplies power to your"box".
It uses a small amount of power as signal and it's isolated
from your head unit.It won't even "see" it.
